    Trying to lose weight?

Trying to lose weight? Watch your intake of THIS food to prevent ‘holiday tummy’ and party hangover
Now that the festive season is here, most of you will definitely be looking forward to party hard during the holidays. While drinking and partying all night long with friends may sound great, it’s likely that morning will be plagued by hangovers, leaving you struggling to concentrate and feeling irritable throughout the day. The outcome can be even worse if you are trying to shed a few pounds, largely because booze and weight loss are just two words that never go together. So, if you want to get rid of ‘holiday tummy’, the first thing you can do is to avoid or drink alcohol in moderation and not go overboard at parties. Read: Want to get leaner and fitter in 2018? In fact, that’s not all, drinking too much can take a serious toll on your body. Truth is, alcohol affects every part of the body. Alcohol also interferes with the brain's communication pathways and can affect the way the brain looks and works. These disruptions can change mood and behavior, and make it harder to think clearly and move with coordination.

What’s even worse is that alcohol abuse can impact your health much sooner than that - and it's more serious than a hangover. According to Daily Express, here are three ways alcohol impacts your health if you overdo it:

    Weight gain

The festive season is a nightmare for the waistline, what with all the mince pies, chocolate advent calendars and turkey on offer.

"Drinking can change the way you eat and the food choices you make, which can impact on health and weight," said Rob Hobson, nutritional director at Healthspan and co-author of The Detox Kitchen Bible, adding it can also cause erratic eating patterns such as skipping breakfast or binging. He suggested complementing any partying with a nourishing, balanced diet.

    Vitamin deficiency

Experts warned that bingeing on alcohol can leave you seriously depleted of certain important vitamins.

"Alcohol can increase the demand for certain nutrients used to help the body deal with alcohol, such as the B vitamins," warned Hobson.

B vitamins, which include vitamin b12, niacin and biotin, are important for energy and converting food into fuel.

Even moderate drinking can cause inflammation of the stomach which stops cells making a substance called intrinsic factor, which boosts absorption both key B vitamin.

A lack of vitamin B12 can lead to a build-up of a compound called homocysteine, which in the long term could lead to heart attack and stroke. Read: 5 tricks to avoid putting on pounds over the Christmas season

Actually, drinking too much can have an unpleasant effect on your bowel movement.

According to Don't Bottle It Up, alcohol irritates the small intestine, in addition to the lining of the throat, stomach, and large intestine.

If the small intestine becomes inflamed it can impact on the absorption of nutrients that pass into the large intestine and trigger diarrhoea.

Regular bouts of diarrhoea could cause malnutrition and dehydration.

An occasional glass of wine with dinner isn’t a cause for concern, but the cumulative effects of consuming alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer, or spirits can take its toll. So, monitor your alcohol intake this Christmas season to avoid the adverse effects of overindulgence, which can lead to weight gain and other health problems, particularly liver disease.
