An artist's rendering of a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Indian opposition leader Narendra Modi is building the world's tallest statue at a cost of almost $340 million in honour of one of the country's founding fathers, a project he is using to undermine his chief rivals, the Gandhi-Nehru political dynasty. The statue of Patel, who was first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's deputy and his interior minister but often at odds with him, is to be built on a river island in Gujarat, the home state of both Patel and Modi.

Australian humpback dolphins swimming off the coast of northern Australia. Researchers have identified a new humpback dolphin species off northern Australia, using genetic mapping to single out an animal not previously known to science. A global team led by the US-based Wildlife Conservation Society made the discovery after examining almost 200 dead dolphins and tissue specimens from live animals across the four Atlantic, Indian and Indo-Pacific ocean areas where humpbacks are known to live.

A 61-year-old man is seen inflating four rubber rings using just his nose in Chengdu, China. To make it more difficult Nie Yongbing had two people stand on each of the rings as he inflated them. After connecting a hose to the four rings Nie invited 8 adult neighbours to stand on them. By pressing his left nostril closed he then inflated the rings using air from his right nostril. It took him 20 minutes to inflate all four. According to Nie he first acquired the stunt thanks to a chronic problem with his circulation. He says: A folk doctor suggested me to blow balloons to cure it. When he started blowing up balloons Nie noticed a difference. Each time after blowing, I feel very comfortable, feeling the blood circulation was normal.

Police officers and security guards are seen confiscating giant home-made plastic bags used to steal natural gas from underground pipes in Puyang, China. Officers said the gas stealing has been prevalent in the region for a long time, and it's not only causing economic losses to the gas companies but also poses a grave risk as the bags are like 'moving bombs'. Local villagers pump the natural gas from a nearby oil field into their home-made plastic bags in order to take it home and use in the kitchen. According to one local a 'bag' of gas lasts for around five days when connected up to her stove.
